Growth for Good’s Top Suggestions for Nonprofit Leaders

Many nonprofits are still reacting to the COVID crisis and are struggling with the most recent CARES Act.

Here are our top five tips and top five links to thoughtfully guide you through these difficult times:

  1. Respond to the immediate needs of your staff and clients. Address their health, housing, and basic needs. Your commitment, passion, and integrity will help you and your board serve your community, retain staff, and inspire donors.
  2. Your mission is still relevant, and your organization has to continue to serve and meet the need pre-COVID. But now, you also need to meet the challenge to pivot and find the flexibility and creativity to efficiently manage these changes.
  3. Now more than ever, leaders will need to rely on trusted resources as sounding boards. Lead your organization by relying on your executive team, board members, trusted advisors, and major donors. Start by developing financial models for cash flow and apply to the CARES Act.
  4. Keep fundraising! Your donors want to know what they can do to help. Make a strong case for support so major donors know your financial needs. Be transparent regarding what’s needed most: general operating, salaries, expenses, etc.
  5. Segment your donors and develop a plan to ask them for support. Call every major donor personally to discuss the impact, your response, and how their investment could help. Then develop phone/mail/digital appeal campaigns to secure donations and monthly subscribers.
